  • 2003 M. Chapoutier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac – France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (11/18/2017)

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about two hours.

Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of saddle leather, tobacco, brown spices and mixed berries. Flavors of tangy raspberries, sweet berries and sweet cherries. Medium to bright acidity, firm tannin, full bodied. Drink with a little air or hold. I’d lean towards drink now. I have a feeling this one won’t really improve with more time in bottle. (91 points)

  • 1997 M. Chapoutier Ermitage l’Ermite – France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage (4/26/2013)
    WIML93

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of meat, plums, black berries and currants. Flavors of black berries, plums and black currants. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannin, full bodied. Drink now with some air time or continue to hold. Still a youthful wine. No rush on this one. It should pick up more tertiary notes and hopefully a few more points if you’re into that with some more bottle age. (93 points)
