    Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of soapstone, violets, white pepper, plums and black cherries. Flavors of Bing cherries, plums, currants and black raspberries. Medium acidity, firm tannin, full bodied. Drink now with some air to help open it a bit first or continue to hold and drink over the short to medium term. (92 points)

BLACKBIRD & MA(I)SONRY WINERY TASTING – Ma(i)sonry Tasting Room, Yountville, California (3/14/2011)

Ma(i)sonry, a play on the French word for house, is an interesting blend of wine and art. There are lovely works of art both inside and outside of the attractive stone tasting room & art gallery. Upon arrival you are given a glass of Ma(i)sonry Sauvignon Blanc to sip while you peruse the works of art spread throughout the two story structure. When ready you typically head outside to the backyard where there are more works of art to view while you taste your way through your selection of the artisan wines available. For our tasting we chose to taste our way through the wines of Blackbird. Here are the results:

  • 2009 Ma(i)sonry Sauvignon Blanc hanson-hsieh – USA, California, Napa Valley

    Light yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of gooseberries, grapefruit, peach and acacia. Light flavors of grapefruit, lime and a bit of apricot. Medium acidity, light body. Drink now. (88 pts.)

  • 2010 Blackbird Vineyards Arriviste – USA, California, Napa Valley

    Tasted non blind at the tasting room.

    Salmon color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of raspberries, berries, florals and a hint of bubble gum. Flavors of berries, raspberries and a dash of strawberries. Medium acidity, light body. Drink now. (90 pts.)

    42% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc.

    Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of thatch, cocoa, black berries, plums and wet stones. Flavors of black berries, black cherries and plums. Medium acidity, medium tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink now with air or into the 2-6 year window plus or minus. (92 pts.)

    75% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon.

    Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of soapstone, plums, currants and melted black licorice. Rick berry flavors followed by black cherries, black raspberries and dark plums. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, full bodied. Drink now with air or into the 2-7 year time frame plus or minus. (93 pts.)

Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink now with some air or into the 2-7 year time frame plus or minus. (93 pts.)
