Mariachi Loco Restaurant is a quirky little Mexican food restaurant billed as a Latin American Restaurant located in downtown Roseburg, Oregon. The interior appears to be a bit dated and could use some sprucing up consisting of slightly worn floors, wooden railings and matching wooden tables and chairs dotting the smallish restaurant. Off the shelf posters and framed mass produced art line the walls. Cutouts of Mariachis and Cowboys are situated here and there throughout the restaurant providing opportunities for you to snap a photo of your loved one pimping for Cerveza Corona.
The menu offers basic Mexican food choices for lunch. Combinations are your selection of an item from a list of options paired with sides of rice and beans for $7.50. There are plenty of burrito plates as well as some grilled items such as Carne Asada. There are also a few specials available that change occasionally. The dinner menu is a bit more extensive on selections or repeats of the lunch entrees with slightly larger portions (i.e. billed as a 7″ tortilla at lunch; 10″ at dinner). The items appear to be Tex Mex oriented but the flavor profile appears to be more true Mexican in orientation. Read less spice, more bland here.
For my entree I ordered one of the specials. The Pollo y Mas ($11.50) consists of a pounded and spice rubbed Grilled Chicken filet paired with a battered dipped and pan fried Cheese Chile Relleno. The chicken was flavorful and moist, particularly when wrapped in complimentary corn or flour tortillas topped with excellent fresh sour cream and a little of their homemade guacamole. The Chile Relleno that is topped with a ranchero sauce and crema leans towards a bland presentation. The dish comes with black beans and Spanish rice. The rice was very tasty but the beans were bland tasting and al dente in firmness. This dish was OK but I much preferred the Chile Relleno I had on a previous visit. I’m not sure why that aspect of my dish has declined over the past 4 months.
Attire is casual, jeans do the job like all places in Roseburg. Parking is free on the street in the roughly 3 x 5 block free parking zone of downtown businesses. Major credit cards are accepted.
Conclusion: Mariachi Loco is OK but I wouldn’t go out of my way to dine here again.
